Invitation to the London Eza

I am writing once again with great pleasure to invite you to the 165th London Eza, to be held at Three Wheels on Sunday 3rd September 2023 at 1:30 pm.

We have decided to hold this forthcoming London Eza in the same hybrid format as previously used to combat the spread of covid, as we have found it allows those who are unable to attend in person for whatever reason to participate in the same spiritual movement online.

Every summer for the past twenty-six years, we have been holding a very special ceremony to pray for World Peace and the reconciliation of British and Japanese veterans of the Burma Campaign during the last world war. This Eza has also regularly included a further service for the soldiers and civilians of different nationalities who lost their lives in Burma or elsewhere during the Second World War. In particular, this year’s ceremony will incorporate the thirteenth memorial service for the late Mr. Maurice Franses, one of the founders of the Burma Campaign Friendship Group.

These services will be conducted by Christian and Buddhist representatives of different denominations, including Doctor Desmond Biddulph, President of The Buddhist Society, and Father Michael Ipgrave, Bishop of Lichfield Cathedral. Buddhist ministers will include representatives from Myanmar Buddhist organisations as well as from the Amaravati Buddhist Monastery, Nipponzan Myōhōji, Shōbō-an Zen Centre, Fairlight Zen Buddhist Temple, Rissho Kosei Kai and Three Wheels.

As every year, the Japanese Embassy, always so supportive of “reconciliation movements”, has been invited to send their own representatives and, accompanied by several other diplomats from the Embassy, Mr Akihiro Tsuji, Political Minister, has graciously consented to preface the meeting with a talk of his own.

At the forthcoming meeting I would like to give an address of thanks regarding all that has been done for us by all those war veterans, now already deceased, with special reference to the late Mr Maurice Franses and Mr Satoru Yanagi, remembering the difficult problems they confronted and their serious prayer for world peace and reconciliation.

Let us discuss frankly what we can do for world peace.

I am much looking forward to the opportunity to see you all again.

Yours sincerely

Kemmyo Taira Sato
